Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf
Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf. When it comes to baking, there are a few things in this world that make me ditch any “I need to eat less carbs” thoughts, and one of those is warm bread fresh from the oven. The satisfying moment when you slide a beautiful loaf out of the oven and honestly don’t even allow it to cool completely before slicing into it. This is no ordinary loaf, it’s a beautifully light, sour but sweet piece of heaven. This Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf is just amazing. If I’m being honest, I’ve never been a huge fan of poppy seeds. I’m pretty sure it’s the odd speckles in a slice of cake, just waiting around to get stuck in my teeth. But this cake is not about me, there’s someone in my house who will always pick lemon poppy seed first.
My husband calls this loaf his favourite cake in the whole world. Which is odd because he does NOT like sour things, I love sour things. So, from time to time I tell him to try a bite of something knowing full well its sour, just to watch the panic in his eyes, while I laugh at his actions or facial expressions that follow. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.

Today I want to share why this lemon poppy seed loaf is such a crowd-pleaser, how to make it, and even a little bit of useful information about poppy seeds themselves — including something surprising that might come up in conversation someday: the food test phenomenon.
Why This Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf Is So Loved
Before we dive into the recipe, let’s talk flavour. This loaf isn’t just “lemony” it’s beautiful, fresh, and has just enough zest to wake up your senses without being overpowering. The poppy seeds add tiny bursts of texture and look beautiful against the pale yellow cake. A simple lemon glaze drizzled on top turns this from a plain loaf into something you’d happily serve with coffee, tea, or even a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
And the beauty of this loaf? It’s quick and easy. With ingredients you’ll find in your pantry ( maybe barring the poppy seeds though ).
What’s up Poppy?
Before we go further, let’s talk about poppy seeds for a moment, because if your like me, you’ve already googled them. Your instincts were right: poppy seeds can cause surprising results in certain drug tests. But before anyone freaks out, here’s the truth based on real science:
Where poppy seeds come from
Poppy seeds come from the plant Papaver somniferum L. — the same plant that produces opium. Yes you heard that right, Opium. However, the seeds themselves don’t naturally contain high amounts of morphine or codeine. Instead, they can pick up trace amounts of opiate residue from the latex of the seed pod during harvesting. That residue is what sometimes shows up in tests.
False positives on drug tests
There have been documented cases where people who ate poppy seed-laden foods like bagels, muffins, or cakes tested positive for opiates (morphine or codeine) on urine drug screenings. This isn’t because the seeds are giving you a high — they simply contain trace opiate residue that can be enough to trigger a drug test.
Modern drug tests often use higher cutoff levels to reduce false positives. Still, if you’re taking a test that uses older, lower thresholds, it’s smart to avoid poppy seed products like this loaf for a day or two beforehand.
Do poppy seeds contain morphine/codeine?
Technically, no — at least not in the sense that eating them will affect you the way taking medication would. The seeds may carry trace amounts of morphine and codeine residues because of how they’re harvested and processed, and that’s enough to be detected in a urine test. But there’s nothing in normal poppy seed consumption that causes narcotic effects.
So here’s the practical takeaway: poppy seeds are safe to eat, and you’re not ingesting enough opiates to feel anything, but they can cause false positives in some sensitive drug screenings. If you might be tested soon, it’s best to skip poppy seed baked goods for a couple of days just to be safe.

Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf Instructions
Step 1: Prep Your Oven and Pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9in x 5in loaf pan with a little oil or butter. This helps the loaf release cleanly when it’s done.
Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together:
- Flour
- Baking powder
- Baking soda
- Poppy seeds
- Sugar
- A pinch of salt
Set this aside while you mix up the wet ingredients.
Step 3: Wet Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together:
- Egg
- Milk
- Yoghurt
- Melted butter
- Lemon zest
- Lemon juice

Step 4: Bring It Together
Pour the dry ingredients gently into the wet mixture and fold lightly until just combined. Use a whisk to avoid overmixing – Mix until everything is combined. The batter will be thick and not runny.
Step 5: Bake
Pour your batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for about 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Step 6: Lemon Glaze
Leave your loaf in the pan while it cools, whisk together powdered sugar and a bit of fresh lemon juice until you have a smooth glaze. Drizzle over the loaf while it’s still warm, it adds a zesty sweetness and a sticky top we all love.
Tips for the Perfect Loaf
- Use fresh lemons — bottled lemon juice won’t give you the same vibrant flavour.
- Don’t skip the glaze — it’s the finishing touch that turns a simple loaf into something memorable.
- Store it right — keep your lemon poppy seed loaf wrapped at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the fridge for up to a week.
