Homemade Face Moisturiser – A simple, natural recipe for everyday skin care
There’s a point where you start reading ingredient labels and realize you don’t actually recognize half of what’s in your skincare. That’s usually where the shift happens.

This homemade face moisturiser is one of those recipes that brings things back to basics. It uses a handful of ingredients, comes together in under 30 minutes, and gives you something you can use daily without overthinking it.
I am in my 40’s and have been using this specific combination for about two years. I have combination skin and this recipe perfectly balances it. It leaves my skin feeling moisturised and not greasy.
Just a simple blend of butters, oil, and a light natural scent if you choose to add it. This recipe is so versatile it can be used on your face or body.

- 1 tbsp rosehip oil
Optional Essential Oils (for scent)
Choose one of my tried and tested blends:
Blend Option 1 – Soft Floral Balance
- 2 drops clary sage
- 2 drops geranium

Blend Option 2 – Light Floral & Warm
- 2 drops lavender
- 2 drops frankincense

Meet the ingredients for your Homemade Face Moisturiser
This blend is balanced in a way that works well for both face and body use. It’s rich enough to feel nourishing, but simple enough that it doesn’t overwhelm the skin.
Each ingredient plays a role.
Mango Butter
Mango butter is known for its smooth, lightweight feel. It helps soften the skin and gives the final product a silky texture without making it feel overly heavy.
It’s a great choice if you like something that absorbs well but still feels like it’s doing its job.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is the richer part of this recipe. It adds depth and body to the moisturiser and helps create that whipped, creamy consistency.
It also supports the skin’s natural barrier by forming a light protective layer that helps lock in moisture.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is technically a liquid wax, not a true oil. It closely resembles the skin’s natural oils, which is why it blends so well and doesn’t feel overly greasy.
It helps balance the texture of the butters and allows the moisturiser to spread easily across the skin.
Rosehip Oil
Rosehip oil is a lightweight carrier oil. It is naturally high in antioxidants (like vitamin A and C) and it helps to balances out heavier butters like mango and shea.
It absorbs easily, helps soften and smooth the look of skin and supports a more even-looking complexion.
Choosing Your Scent for your Homemade Face Moisturizer
Scent is optional, but it can make the experience feel more personal. I experiment with a lot of different scents – even more so now that I have started my own Essential Oil brand – Navy Heart Essential Oils. The two options below are my favorite, light and floral without overpowering your senses.
If you don’t want it to be too floral, try switching it out for sandalwood, cedarwood, patchouli or helichrysum. They have more of an earthy scent.
Blend 1: Soft Floral Balance
Clary sage, geranium, and frankincense come together with a touch of lavender to create a grounded floral scent.
- Clary Sage – soft, herbaceous note
- Geranium – fresh, slightly sweet floral
- Frankincense – warm and resinous
- Lavender – gentle and familiar
This blend feels calm, balanced, and easy to use daily.
Blend 2: Light Floral & Warm
This blend is simpler and a little more delicate.
- Lavender – soft floral base
- Frankincense – adds depth
- Neroli – light, slightly citrus-floral note
It’s a clean, subtle scent that doesn’t linger too heavily.
Homemade Face Moisturiser Instructions
- Add the mango butter and shea butter to a heat-safe bowl
- Gently melt using a double boiler until fully liquid
- Remove from heat and stir in the jojoba oil
- Let the mixture cool until it begins to thicken slightly
(placing it in the fridge for 10–15 minutes helps speed this up) - Add your rosehip oil and essential oils, if using
- Using a hand mixer, whip the mixture until light and fluffy
- Transfer to a clean 4 oz jar
Essential oils to avoid in face creams
Strong / irritating oils
These are just too harsh for delicate facial skin (even if they’re popular elsewhere):
- Peppermint
- Eucalyptus
- Oregano
- Thyme
- Cinnamon (bark or leaf)
- Clove
These can cause stinging, redness, or irritation—especially on the face.
Phototoxic citrus oils (big one)
Some COLD-PRESSED citrus oils can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight:
- Bitter orange
- Lime (expressed)
- Lemon (expressed)
- Grapefruit
These can increase the risk of sun sensitivity when left on the skin.
Texture & Use for your Face Moisturiser
Once whipped, the texture becomes soft and airy. A small amount goes a long way.
Because this is an oil-based moisturiser, it’s best applied to slightly damp skin or used in small amounts and worked in gently.
It can be used on both the face and body, depending on your preference.
Simple Ingredient Swaps
One of the benefits of making your own products is the ability to adjust things based on your skin type or preference.
Here are a few easy swaps.
For a Lighter Feel
If you prefer something less rich:
- Replace shea butter with kokum butter or cocoa butter (in smaller amounts)
- Increase jojoba oil slightly
This creates a firmer but lighter-feeling moisturiser.
For Very Dry Skin
If your skin tends to need more moisture:
- Keep the shea butter as is
- Replace a portion of jojoba oil with avocado oil
This gives a more deeply nourishing feel.
For Oily or Combination Skin
To keep things lighter and more balanced:
- Reduce shea butter slightly
- Add a small amount of grapeseed oil alongside jojoba
This helps create a more lightweight finish.
For Sensitive Skin
Keep it simple:
- Skip essential oils entirely
- Stick with mango butter, shea butter, and jojoba oil only
Sometimes less really is more.
Use & Safety
A few simple guidelines:
- For external use only
- Do not apply essential oils directly to the skin without dilution
- Perform a patch test before first use
- Avoid contact with eyes
- Discontinue use if irritation occurs
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
Storage & Shelf Life for this Homemade Face Moisturiser
Because this product does not contain water, it has a relatively stable shelf life when stored properly.
- Store in a sealed container
- Keep away from heat and direct sunlight
- Use clean, dry hands or a spatula when scooping
For best quality, use within 3–6 months.
A Simple ending
There’s a lot of information in the skincare world. New ingredients, new trends, new products — all promising something better.
But sometimes the best place to start is with something simple. A few ingredients. A straightforward process. Something you can make yourself, understand, and adjust as needed.
This homemade face moisturiser isn’t about replacing everything on your shelf. It’s about having one reliable option that does what it’s meant to do — moisturise your skin in a simple, balanced way. No extra ingredients or unnatural fillers, its natural clean products.
