Simple All Natural DIY Deodorant
Ditch the Toxins: Make Your Own All Natural DIY Deodorant!
All Natural DIY Deodorant. For many years I was using normal store bought anti-perspirant or roll-on. And, for many years I thought this was okay. Until the realisation hit me that your skin is your body’s biggest organ! (Yeah, we learnt that in school right, but who listened?) The older I got the more I began listening to my body, your skin absorbs what you put on it, everything, simple ‘great-smelling’ creams (with a lot of big words in the ingredient list), body wash’s, body butter’s and deodorants.
Have you ever looked at the ingredient list on your store-bought products? Between the tongue-twisting chemicals and mysterious compounds, it can feel more like you’re prepping for a science experiment than your daily hygiene routine. Why not make your own natural deodorant that works, smells amazing and is free of harsh chemicals!
What’s in store-bought deodorant?
Conventional deodorants and antiperspirants are often packed with chemicals that, frankly, our bodies don’t need. Here are a few:
- Aluminum Compounds: These are used to block sweat glands and prevent perspiration. But they’ve been linked to hormone disruption and are under scrutiny for potential connections to breast cancer.
- Parabens: Common preservatives that mimic estrogen in the body and may play a role in hormone-related health issues.
- Phthalates: Used to make scents last longer, but they’ve been linked to reproductive and developmental problems.
- Triclosan: An antibacterial agent that may contribute to antibiotic resistance and disrupt thyroid function.
Now, if I were you. I would panic and toss everything in the bathroom cabinet, haha but let’s take a deep breath—we can make this change slowly and simply. Starting with one product at a time.
The All Natural DIY Deodorant Solution. Making your own deodorant is mainly about avoiding toxins. But, it’s about embracing what’s natural and customizing your scent. Plus, your skin (especially your underarms) deserves gentle, loving care.
All Natural DIY Deodorant Ingredients
Let’s talk about the ingredient breakdown for your DIY deodorant. Here are the core ingredients, each with a purpose:
- Butters and Waxes
- Coconut Oil: Naturally antibacterial and moisturizing.
- Cocoa Butter: Smells delicious and gives a silky texture to your deodorant.
- Shea Butter: Rich in vitamins A and E, perfect for soothing sensitive skin.
- Beeswax: Helps solidify the deodorant and provides a light barrier on the skin.
- Absorbents
- Arrowroot Powder: Absorbs moisture without clogging pores.
- Baking Soda: Natural deodorizer, but use in moderation if you have sensitive skin.
- Essential Oils
Time to get creative! Here are some of my favourite essential oils that make your deodorant smell lovely:
- Lavender: Floral, calming, and great for sensitive skin.
- Tea Tree: Antibacterial and fresh.
- Sage: Herbal, earthy, slightly spicy, and camphorous.
- Lemongrass: Bright and citrusy—great for a morning pick-me-up.
- Cedarwood: Earthy, grounding, and subtly masculine.
- Geranium: Floral, sweet, and excellent for balancing skin.
Mix and match! A beautiful combo might be lavender + cedarwood for a floral-woody blend, or lemongrass + tea tree for citrusy freshness.
The Simple All Natural DIY Deodorant Recipe
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 2 tbsp shea butter (or cocoa butter)
- 1 tbsp beeswax pellets
- 3 tbsp arrowroot powder
- 1 tbsp baking soda (or skip for very sensitive skin)
- 10 drops essential oil (your choice!)
Instructions:
- In a double boiler, gently melt the coconut oil, shea/cocoa butter, and beeswax.
- Once melted, remove from heat and stir in arrowroot powder and baking soda.
- Let it cool slightly, then add your essential oils.
- Pour the mixture into a small jar or an empty deodorant stick container.
- Let it set at room temperature or pop it in the fridge for faster firming.
Voilà! You just made your own clean, chemical-free deodorant.
Avoid your powders sinking to the bottom while your All Natural DIY Deodorant sets;
- Cool Before Pouring – Let the melted oils (like coconut oil, shea butter, or beeswax) cool slightly—until the mixture starts to thicken but is still pourable.
- This thicker texture helps suspend powders more evenly.
- Don’t wait too long or it will be hard to pour into your container.
- Stir While Cooling – Keep gently stirring the mixture as it cools to prevent powders from settling.
- You can even place the bowl in an ice bath and stir constantly until it’s thick and uniform.
- Once it’s slushy, spoon or pour it into your container.
- Quick Chill After Pouring – Once poured into the final container, put it in the fridge or freezer right away to speed up solidification.
- The quicker it sets, the less time powders have to sink.
Tips for First-Time Users
- Transition Time: If you’ve been using commercial antiperspirants, your body may take a week or two to adjust. During this time, your sweat glands may be working overtime—this is normal!
- Test It First: Try a patch test on your inner arm to ensure your skin loves the formula.
- Customize It: Too soft? Add more beeswax. Too firm? Use a touch more coconut oil.
Smell Good, Feel Great. Switching to a natural deodorant isn’t just a trend—it’s a lifestyle shift toward wellness and self-care. You’re taking control of what goes on (and into) your body, and that’s empowering. So grab your mixing bowl, pick your favorite essential oils and start creating!
