My husband always jokes about me being a ‘Meat and Potatoes’ girl.  To be honest, I laugh but know wholeheartedly that he is 100% correct. Don’t get me wrong, I love other foods but if meat and potatoes was the only food left in this world, I wouldn’t complain.  This Easy Cheesy Potato Bake is a super quick, simple recipe of soft potatoes covered in creamy cheesy sauce, topped with a crispy layer of cheese. I haven’t met a single person to say no to this dish.

Four Simple ingredients for this cheesy bake dish

The fact that this easy potato bake recipe only has a couple of ingredients, makes it so much simpler when looking for a quick easy dish to add to a dinner or braai or where I’m living now people call it a barbeque. Coupled with some meat, veggies or salads of your choice, it’s a great starch dish to add to any meal. There is also so much room to add additional ingredients to this Easy Cheesy Potato Bake to give it some extra pops of flavour, such as bacon bits, onions or mushrooms.

For this Easy Cheesy Potato Bake Recipe we use about 1kg of thinly sliced potatoes, white, yellow or red potatoes will work nicely in this recipe. Just under two cups of cream, depending where you are in the world these creams will all suffice; fresh cream, pouring cream and whipping cream. The only thing that changes would be the fat content of the cream. You can also substitute the cream with milk if you don’t have cream handy. Finely chop some garlic and add some grated cheese.

  2. Finely chop your garlic cloves, mix into your cream
  3. Thinly slice your potatoes
  4. Layer your sliced potatoes, cream mix and grated cheese, repeat until your dish is full
  5. Pop into your over at 190C or 380F for around 80 minutes

Family Favourite Potato Bake Recipe. Creamy, Cheesy, Melt-in-your-mouth Potatoes.

Ingredients

  • 1kg Peeled Potatoes
  • 475mls Cream
  • 250mls Grated Cheese
  • 2 Cloves garlic

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 190 C / 380 F
  2. Peel and thinly slice your potatoes
  3. Mix your chopped garlic and cream (milk as substitute)
  4. Layer an oven-proof dish with your potatoes, cream-mix, grated cheese. Keep layering until your dish is full or your potatoes are finished
  5. Finish with a layer of grated cheese
  6. Bake for approx 80 minutes or until lightly golden

Notes

  • Best dish size ( 33cm x 24cm x 5cms ) If you dont have a dish this size, place your peeled potatoes into a dish before you slice them. When you cant fit anymore into the dish, then thats usually enough to fit once they sliced.
  • If you would like to flavour things up a bit, you can add thinly sliced onions, mushrooms, bacon bits or your favourite herbs and spices
  • For cheese options, I like to use a strong / mild cheddar for the best cheesy flavour.
